Mariam Rezaei

Turntables pushed beyond recognition - as instrument, orchestra and machine for sonic transformations. Anglo-Iranian composer, turntablist and performer Mariam Rezaei brings an intensely physical approach to the instrument, moving between experimental music, noise, free improvisation, mutant club music and hip-hop. Working with vinyl as a live compositional instrument, Rezaei has developed a radically expanded turntablist vocabulary - from ´free juggling´ and ´needle weaving´ to ´fractured loops´ and ´turntable sines´. The result can be visceral and overwhelming, but also strangely delicate: warped rhythms, mangled samples, shimmering textures and fragments of voice and melody colliding in real time. Described by The Wire as “turntablism at its most physical and extreme”, Rezaei has performed and collaborated with artists including Eleni Poulou, Lucy Railton, Julien Desprez, Lukas König, Kobe Van Cauwenberghe, Okkyung Lee and Maria Chávez while her work has been commissioned by Donaueschinger Musiktage, Ensemble Intercontemporain and others. Following Fractured and the Blud/Skeen/Bown trilogy, her new double album Selected Adequate Works arrives on Heat Crimes in 2027.
